WEEK  1

DBM 294  Week 1 Individual Assignment Database Development Paper

Instructions:

Your individual assignments in this course will focus on implementing

and manipulating a SQL Server® database.

Write a 2- to 3-page business proposal that addresses the following:

  • Describe a business problem that requires data management and

could be solved by implementing a database.

  • Detail the design of a database that will solve the problem.
  • List the tables (minimum of 8) that will be created.
  • List the columns and data types that will be part of each table.
  • Identify which columns will be primary and foreign keys (for foreign

keys, indicate which primary keys these will reference).

  • Explain what concept each table will represent, and give one or two

examples of the kind of data that will be in each column.

The database you describe in this week's assignment will be

implemented and manipulated in future weeks.

Every table in your database should either contain a foreign key or be

the target of a foreign key - you should have no isolated tables.

As you are creating your tables, note that in future weeks when you

implement and populate the database, you will be expected to have at

least five records per table. This knowledge may inform the tables you

design.

Submit your proposal using the Assignment Files tab at the top of the

page.

 WEEK 2

DBM 294 Week 2 Individual Assignment Data Definition Language

Instructions:

Implement a database that matches the specifications developed in

your Week One individual assignment.

Submit a file containing the SQL code needed to perform the following

tasks:

  • Create a database named DBM294_LastName where LastName is

replaced with your own last name.

  • Create the tables you designed in week one within this database.
  • Create the primary and foreign key constraints on those tables in

accordance with the original specification.

Your document should be a plain text file (not an MS Office document,

PDF, or similar), and it should contain nothing but the SQL code

needed to do the above. Make sure that executing your code will result

in the creation of the database, tables, and related constraints. This

means that you should test your code live against Microsoft® SQL

Server® in the Toolwire® environment.

Submit, in addition to the one above, a file containing screen shots

which show the database with the name visible, and the tables showing

all columns, primary and foreign keys.

You may use the GUI tools to perform the above tasks and then

generate the associated SQL scripts automatically, but again, you

should test the execution of those scripts before submitting them.

Do NOT add any data to your tables - that will come in subsequent

weeks.

WEEK 3

DBM 294 Week 3 Individual Assignment  Data Manipulation Language

Instructions:

Extend the SQL script you developed for the Week Two individual

assignment.

Populate the tables you created with appropriate sample data. Use at

least 5 rows for each table. Some tables may require more than 5 rows

to create a sensible data set. Take all of the INSERT commands you

used to add this data and add them to your SQL script.

Write additional SQL commands in your script that demonstrate use of

the following keywords and techniques (one separate command to

demonstrate each bullet). These commands should interact with the

tables you have been creating.

  • UPDATE
  • DELETE
  • BETWEEN
  • LIKE
  • TOP
  • DISTINCT
  • Named columns
  • Calculated columns

Using the Assignment Files tab:

Submit your SQL script.

Submit a document containing screen shots of each SQL command

and the corresponding output

WEEK 4

DBM 294 Week 4 Individual Assignment Data Query Language

Instructions:

Extend the SQL script you developed for the week three individual

assignment.

Write additional SQL commands in your script that demonstrate use of

the following keywords and techniques (one separate command to

demonstrate each bullet). These commands should interact with the

tables you have been creating.

  • INNER JOIN
  • OUTER JOIN
  • ORDER BY
  • GROUP BY
  • Aggregate function: SUM
  • Aggregate function: AVG
  • Subquery

Using the Assignment Files tab:

Submit your SQL script.

Submit a document containing screen shots of each SQL command

and the corresponding output.

WEEK 5

DBM 294 Week 5 Individual Assignment  Transactions, Errors, and Procedures

Instructions:

Extend the SQL script you developed for the Week Four individual

assignment.

Write additional SQL commands in your script that demonstrate use of

the following techniques. These commands should interact with the

tables you have been creating.

Include the following:

  • A stored procedure that accepts at least one parameter and updates

one or more records based on the value passed in the parameter.

  • Two update commands made as part of the same transaction.
  • An error handler that executes if there is an error with a transaction.

Using the Assignment Files tab:

Submit your SQL script.

Submit a document containing screen shots of each SQL command

and the corresponding output.

DBM 294 Week 5 Individual Assignment Career Opportunities

Instructions:

Write a 1- to 2-page paper discussing what professional organizations

you might join, and which websites you might visit that would provide

insight into a career that includes responsibility for using SQL in a

database environment.

Submit your paper using the Assignment Files tab at the top of the

page.
