Focus of the Final Paper

For this Final Paper, you will select a topic from the list provided below and write an eight to ten page literary analysis written in the persuasive essay style. Throughout this five week course, you will revise and refine the topic so that you may write an interesting and informative literary analysis. A literary paper consists of an investigation of the primary text you are studying. Before incorporating secondary sources, you must already have done your own analysis of the literature at hand. Use secondary sources only to enhance your own ideas. Three to five literary sources must be used, preferably from JSTOR.


1. Point of View: Explore the concept of self as ‘other’ in Jhumpa Lahiri’s Hell-Heaven.

2. Character: Analyze the relationship between narrator and author in the work of Margaret Atwood. (Focus on Happy Endings, Spelling, and This is a Photograph of Me.)

3. Imagery: How does Edgar Allen Poe use imagery to further plot in The Fall of the House of Usher or The Cask of Amontillado? Be sure to consider Exposition, Complication (Rising Action), Falling Action (Denouement), and Resolution (Hamaertia)

4. Explore the interplay between rhythm, imagery, and metaphor in the work of Langston Hughes. Focus on five poems.

5. How does Ibsen’s use of setting render the play A Doll’s House a work of Realism?

6. Explore the diction of William Shakespeare’s Othello by explaining the significance of the playwright’s deft maneuvering between prose and verse.

7. Explore the dynamics between visual art and poetry. To what affect do the allusions of both works relate? Please use two poets from the color insert in the text.

Writing the Final Paper

The Final Paper:

1. Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

2. Must include a title page with the following:

a. Title of paper

b. Student’s name

c. Course name and number

d. Instructor’s name

e. Date submitted

3. Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.

4. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.

5. Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.

6. Must use at least three scholarly resources.

7. Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

8. Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
